In between my years spent in the hospitality industry (see At Your Service) I became a Certified Personal Trainer. I didn’t stay with the profession, but I did take with me a myriad of personal health and wellness education that has served me and my family quite well over the years.
One helpful bit of information that has stuck with me is the importance of drinking enough water. You don’t need certification to figure this one out, but my mind was truly opened when I began to understand why I needed my eight full glasses everyday. Here are the highlights.
- Water is one of the most important elements in maintaining healthy body weight as it is a natural appetite suppressant: Drink enough and you’ll eat less excess calories (food intake is still important!).
- The kidneys need enough water to function well. When they don’t the liver takes over some of their work. Water keeps the liver from being overloaded so it can do it’s job of metabolizing stored fat into energy you can use.
- Extra energy means you’re less tired.
- Water helps flush the body of unwanted waste (and that stored fat) so toxins don’t build up in your system.
- If you don’t take in enough water, the body goes into survival mode and retains it ~ think swollen ankles.
- Water helps keep your skin healthy and hydrated, less sag is much more attractive. It can also help keep the skin clear of blemishes as excess toxins are flushed from your system.
- Water intake is necessary to avoid constipation.
On average people need approximately eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day, more if participating in exercise or during hot, dry weather. The debate over temperature lingers, should it be body temperature, should it be cold? I think however you prefer it, that’s best. That way you’ll drink more.
Cheers!
Thank you for this! One thing I don’t do is drink enough water. I’m going to pour myself a glass right now. 🙂
Me too, Jennifer. Cheers!
